Upswing...at the moment

Vern is on the upside right now. His reading is on target. He has been doing a decent job on his chores. He listens occasionally. Maybe it's just because it's spring. Hey I'll take it whatever it is.

He makes me smile.

This weekend he is going on a campout with this older brother and dad. He will love that as there is a catfish lake there and last time he caught a few and was very excited about that.

This morning all 3 kids were snuggling on the couch with me. I tell you what, no matter how BIG they get, I never tire of the love we share just holding each other. THAT is what it is all about.

Sleep machine update...

Just a quick entry to let you all know the sleep machine clock is indeed a success. We have only had one night since we started of I can't get to sleep. I would call that a success. He loves to doze off to the noise of the wind or wave or whatever sound he chooses. I am happy that he can get to sleep.

Now if they only had a machine to keep DA MOM asleep...

The Garden Guru

There maybe hope yet. One of my children has shown an interest in gardening. I love to garden. It's therepudic, relaxing, a great workout, not to mention the great food you harvest.

Last year Vern was showing some spark in gardening and this year it has really kicked in.  He brought home a cabbage plant from school. He said he was going to grow the BIGGEST cabbage ever and win $1000.

Tonight he ran to check on his cabbage.

as can be. He is holding it and comes running out to me crying so hard that his cabbage is dead. I told him he could pick out a few things and plant and help me tend the garden.

That helped some. He wants to do sunflowers and cantelope.  I planted my beets tonight and he was right there helping. He even took the hoe and did some weeding. He was excited about it all. It made DA MOM smile.

Here is to a growing garden.

Tattle tale Ann

Ring Ring

"Hi mom." (It's Vern's sister Ann.)

"Hi sweetie, what's up?"

"Vern is eating your L-A-S-T ice cream bar!"

"Ok, let me talk to him."

"Hi mom." (It's now Vern.)

"Hi sweetie" before I could finish Vern interrupts

"Ann pinched my arm and pushed me and..." (I quit listening)

"You know what you need to do right?"

"Yes walk away."

"Good. Now what's this I hear about you eating my LAST ice cream bar?"

"I didn't eat it mom. They yelled at me so I put it back."

"That is a very good choice. I would hate for your last breathing moments to be of you eating my ice cream bar."

"What mom would you rip open my stomach and dig it out of there?" (giggling begins)

"Hey thats a great idea."

"Mom, would you eat some of my fat too?" (more giggling)

"Well I guess I could..."

"But mom it would make you even fatter than you are now!" (outrageous laughing now - I don't see it as funny as he does)

"Yes, I guess you are right again Vern. Aren't you glad you made the right choice and didn't eat the ice cream bar?"

"Yes." followed by lots more giggles. "Bye Mom."

Camera Time

So I was looking at my camera the other night. It seems that Vern had gotten ahold of the camera when it was in the car recently.  Here is a sampling of the photos he took.

Yes I do believe that is a crotch shot...

I don't believe my words would add anything that the photos do not say.

The wind is a blowin...

Now living in the midwest you know the wind blows all the time.  This blog has nothing to do with that. Sorry. :-)

Vern is a light sleeper. He has a difficult time getting to sleep also. We try to keep quiet but sometimes it is hard to walk on egg shells all evening. He will go an hour or two and cry and not get to sleep.  I have tried all the tricks to try and get him to sleep - pray, count sheep, count backwards by 3's, put your legs to sleep and work up, etc... Still he has trouble.

So Superman had a new idea to try. He had a clock that makes noises such as rain, ocean, frogs, crickets, and wind. Vern picked wind. We put it in his room tonight. I am hopeful that this does the trick on helping him get and stay asleep.

WHO ARE YOU?

Vern has recaptured my heart of late. I don't know what he is trying to do to me but I am completely head over heels with him lately.

Of course maybe its just my cycle...

So last night he comes home and seems upset. He storms off to take his shower. After when I am tucking him into bed he gives me the LOOK.  It was a sad, sad look and it broke my heart!  I immediately melt into him asking what is wrong? He then clams up and gets embarassed. I convince him it is ok but still nothing. So we say prayers and I try one more time as I am showering him with kisses and loves.

He breaks down and dishes. I reassure him that I understand and he can come to me with any fears he has. I try to reassure him and give him more kisses and hugs. We say an extra prayer.

Then this morning a new kid arises. I make his breakfast and go continue to get ready for work. When I come back out to check on him (fully prepared to nag to do his chores, brush his teeth, etc.) I am shocked!!!  He is sitting at the kitchen table doing homework. Where is Vern I am thinking? Who is this kid?  I manage to stammer... "What are you doing?"

"Homework. Dad didn't have any colors at his house last night."

"Is your agenda signed?"
"Yes, dad signed it but not my reading."

"Ok" I say still in shock.  "Did you do reading?"

"Um - No"

"That's ok."

I go deal with the other two kids and low and behold here comes Vern to find me with his spelling words.

STILL
IN
SHOCK

The child has NEVER done this before.

Maybe it is a fluke. I will take it.  Love and warm fuzzies continue....

Good things

I sure hope I don't always complain about Vern on this blog. He really is a sweet kid with TONS of imagination and a big heart.

Last night I had to bring work home. I was sitting at the kitchen table working and out comes Vern to watch. He is facinated by the wireless mouse/keyboard. How does what you type get into the computer without wires?  Ever try to explain that in simple terms? It is a challenge.

He was liking watching what I do. He starts in on one story after another and question after question. I'm starting to have a hard time actually working as he is just going on and on and on.

Finally I get an idea. DUH!

So I ask Vern to help me. I have him type in a number on the keyboard and press enter. Then I go make the changes I need to make and save and move onto the next one.

HE
LOVES
IT!

1. He is being productive.
2. He is learning.
3. He is pleasing his mom.
4. He is doing something his siblings have no part in.
5. He is having fun.

He helped me for over 1/2 hour until I finished up right at his bedtime.

First Communion

Happy Easter to all!  May God's Blessings be given to you.

It was an absolutely beautiful spring day this Easter. It was also the day Vern received his first communion.  Vern and I attended two classes in March to prepare him for today.  He was excited of course to drink the "wine".  The kids got to taste it in one of the classes but today was the real deal with bread and wine and the full meaning.

After he came back to his seat I asked him, so how do you feel? Do you feel like your sins have been forgiven?  He shrugged his shoulders and said "My heart feels warm."

I smiled. Good enough for me (even if it was just the wine). :-)

On a side note, Vern also got to find Easter eggs this morning. Yes the kids are older and this is probably the last year we do it (I haven't decided for sure.) but it is still fun to watch them running around searching for eggs and opening them to count their money.

It makes this ole mom smile.
