Summer Football Camp - complete!

Dear Vern Fans,

Summer football camp lasted for 3 days. This was just a camp to review drills and get them pumped for the real league starting Aug 2.
The real league has cleats, helmets and pads.
The real league has practice 3 or 4 times per week. (12+ miles round trip - you add the miles...)
The real league has games starting in September. (more info to follow later)
Vern is perking up and coming to life all ready.

Anyway, back to this summer camp.  Basically Vern L-O-V-E-D it.
It was:
Sweaty
Hot
and
Buggy

To quote Vern - "When I am done practicing mom it feels just like when I get out of the shower. I am just as wet!"
He did get icys and a new shirt for participating.

Since we pilgrimage over the hills and through the woods we are always blessed with wildlife viewing in the evenings.  The first night it was a baby deer still with its spots.  Last night it was a flying low turkey (thank goodness it missed the car) and dragonflies. There were literally 1000's and 1000's of dragonflies buzzing and dancing in the air of all sizes. DA MOM was not on her game and did not take a photograph of this event.  I was busy gawking at the beauty of them plus trying to drive. I will try to do better next time.

We also get to view Lake Missouri River every night as the eastern edge of town is completely flooded and will be through most of the summer and fall. It makes me sad to pop over the hill and see all that water and a farm home in the middle of it. :-(

It will be a good season as both Vern and I are excited for it to begin.

Sincerely,
DA Football Mom

Youth Football Camp!

Dearest Vern Fans,

Yes, It starts tonight.

Vern has his first football camp of the year.  This is a 3 day evening camp. I have no idea what it all entails. I am basically the checkbook and taxi driver. He is excited to go even with this heat. We shall see how he does.

He said just this morning, we should do better than last year as that was the first time we played together. I hope he is right.

Signed,
Football Mom

Hawaii - Day 5

Vern has given me so much to write about lately that I need to get back to our Hawai trip and continue.

We have now reached Wednesday.
Today we drove to Hilo. Picture a rough circle or oblong. We can not drive across the circumference of the circle. We must drive all the way around the outside to get to this city. There is one road that cuts across this island but if you drive your rental car on it and anything should happen - NOT COVERED. Basically it would be drive at your own risk because of the dangers so we just let that road be.  The landscape is completely different on this side of the island from where we stayed.  This first photo is a good example of why things are slow going in and around the mountains on the one road on the island!

But then you get around the curve, and see the view in this next shot and you don't care you are only going 30 mph. You can stare all day at the scenery.

After a while the kids got bored. They began to take pictures to entertain themselves.  Here are some fun shots. I call this one "Contemplation".

This one "The Eyes Have It".

"Speak no Evil" - ya right!!!!

We finally got to the other side of the mountain, the other side of the mountain, the other side of the mountainnnnnnnnnnnnnn to see what we could see.  I know don't quit my day job.  As you can see in this next photo things were not always fun and happy. We had our share of bickering and getting along.  I love his shot because even though Vern is SOOOO MAD, he is still adorable.

We took a hike into the rain forests. This hike was amazing with beautiful breath-taking views. Here is Akaka Falls, which drops 442 ft. into a pool of water below. We also visited Kahuna and Rainbow Falls that day. Straight out of the movies.

In the town of Hilo itself we found a great farmers market. I purchased fresh papya, apple-bananas, and tomatos. There were alot of other things we didn't buy but looked delectable. We took our lunch across the street and feasted on these fresh items ocean side. This photo is where we ate in a nice public gazebo.
The afternoon became quite warm and humid. We found a macadamia nut factory and toured. They were not in production when we visited but still purchased some yummy items.

After all that we headed on the long drive home and ended the day with more swimming.

Going to Grandpa's

Vern is heading to Grandpa's house this weekend.  He is so excited about this.

Grandpa lives on a farm and Vern can do things he longs to do.

Shoot bb guns
Play with a BIG dog
Yell to his hearts content
Ride horses
Ride 4 wheelers
Spend time with Grandpa!

A 10yr old spa.

Vern and I packed last night. As a special treat I gave him my camera, told him to take really good care of it and document his time away. He tucked it inside his sweatshirt and said I will mom! I am going to have someone take pictures of me on the 4 wheeler.

I am hoping this time is good for both Grandpa and Vern. They both need it.

Classic Vern

So we were out and about with just Vern, Superman, and me. Superman mentions Vern wants ice cream. I say are you sure it's Vern that wants the ice cream?  Superman emits a resounding "YES".
"You want ice cream right Vern"
"Huuuhhh?????" Coming from the back seat
"I didn't say any such thing!" Vern denied entire thing and blamed Superman. It was very funny.

Sooooo, the boys got their ice cream. They are eating it and no radio or anything on in the car when all of a sudden Vern says, "Hey mom, do you think the world will end in zombies or fire?"
"Um, I hadn't really thought about it why?"

"Well, zombies are very smart. I think that is how it will end."

"How are zombies formed?"

"Oh the farmers will catch it first.  It will get in the water and farmers drink it."

"Yikes that can't be good.  What will happen when you go to Grandpa's in a couple weeks?"  (Grandpa lives on a farm in Iowa.)

Silence.
More silence.  You can feel Vern thinking hard.

"Mom, Does grandma have pop at her house?  Man, it is probably diet pop. I hate diet."

"Vern," I say, "You won't turn into a zombie at Grandpa's house. You can drink the water it is safe."

More silence.
"I'm sure grandma has juice." I offer up.

Instant perk up from the back seat.  "I'll drink that then!"

"Besides," he continued, "I don't think the zombies will come for another 100 years or so."

Later on that evening when I was outlining this blog and reading parts out loud, John his older brother is listening.  He starts laughing and I ask what part do you think is funny?  He says, oh I told him a zombie story from the movie Crazies a few days ago.  So now we know where some of Vern's material originates from!!!

Back to the story...

A few miles down the road Vern then asks if he can take bb gun to grandpas. It didn't register at the time but I bet it was so he can kill zombies. He had to go on and tell me how powerful this gun was and how he wished it had a red light laser scope on it.

Those zombies at Grandpa's farm won't have a chance now!!!!
