Summer Reading Program

So I told you that Vern was in summer reading as his reading level qualified him. This means he isn't reading at the grade level he should be so they offer assistance in the summer.  So I have him signed up and he has attended a couple weeks of classes 3 days a week.

Tonight I pick him up from Summer Adventure Club and notice they are going on a field trip tomorrow and they leave at 12:30.  I am musing out loud something to the effect of "hmmmm, I think I will have to call the YMCA in the morning to see if you will still be able to go on the field trip to Splash Park."

Piping up from the back seat "Mom, you know I can miss summer reading a few times and it wouldn't hurt."

"No dear Vern, you made the choice to not study during the school year and your grades are not good enough so you qualified and MUST attend summer reading."

"But mommmm"

"Vern, it was YOUR choice."

Grumbling commences from the back seat for the next few minutes but he knows he has no argument that will win against that.

Zoom - zoom

Where does the summer go?  It has been a week since I posted a blog.

I have to confess, I have been taking some time to focus on my relationship this past weekend and not blogging. Hey it happens, we all have to manage our time to the best of our abilities and it just so happened this past weekend needed work in other areas. :-)

Vern has finished up his swimming lessons.  I have yet to find out if he passed. He did have a YMCA councelor call this morning because he didn't pack a swimsuit from his dad's house and was panicing on what to do for swim lessons.  Vern lucked out in that they are finished. I hope he passed.

He also started summer reading at school. This he doesn't like but that is no big surprise now is it???  He has a bit of homework with the class so I will try to keep him focused during the summer.  I have been spending time before bed with him reading a dragon book his grandma gave him and he seems to enjoy that.  Finding something to interest him is a challenge because what he liked last year he doesn't this year.

This past weekend Vern went tubing with the Scouts. He said he had a good time but had to wear a life jacket. I am glad for that part. I didn't hear much else except it was sunny and nice.

That's about all for now.

Summer Scouting

This weekend was our town's celebration.  The town has a "party" every year in June. We have a carnival, parade, car show, crafts, required beer garden, dance, fireman fights. This is all typical midwestern stuff.  One or more of the kids is usually in the parade.  This year Vern and big brother John both marched with the Boy Scouts.  They carried a GINORMOUS flag that is flown on the one of the tallest buildings around here.  It was very humid and they about melted walking and carrying this flag but did a good job. We got a couple photos but only one with Vern that you can see him.
Vern is in corner above.

On this second photo you get more of an idea how BIG the flag is even if you can only see Vern's head across the way.

After the parade we headed to the carnival where I had to squench their spending. They got a lot of candy at the parade and some fun at the carnival.  At least it wasn't raining during this part of the day!

Thankgoodness for buzzers

Vern came home.  I have to post a new picture of him since I disliked the last one so much.

Amazing what a little trim job does to ones appearance.

On another note Superman's nephew spent the night Saturday. It was like Vern was a different boy. He was well behaved and TOTALLY enjoyed a younger person to goof around with. They had a fabulous time.  By today when it was time for the nephew to go home, Vern even gave him his old bicycle and helmet!  I think he liked being a helper instead of the baby, at least for this weekend!

It pains me to post this...

There is never any "discussion" on these type of things. It is just done to try and push my buttons. Some people think this is "cool".  He actually went out in public this way.  I just shake my head and think, wait until this comes back to haunt you. I wash my hands at that point.

Vern's Summer

I envy my kids. They get to do EVERYTHING in the summer.  Vern goes to the YMCA day camp. So he gets to swim, and play, and go on fun field trips. How cool is that?

Then there are the extra things of no school. Vern is signed up for summer reading at his school. He is going whether he wants to or not. His reading scores actually qualified him :-( they were that bad.

Then there are the vacations. Since his mom and dad are divorced he gets 2 vacations!  He gets to go to Washington D.C. with his dad and camping and shopping and rides with his mom. What a summer!

Vern also has swim lessons to do in between everything else and later this month he will be going to a week of Bible School.

WHEW.

When I stayed home as a kid I had chores and reading and maybe swimming to partake in. As my grandparents used to say... "Kids now a days."
