Game 2 - 2012

Week 2 involved a bit of a drive. It was about 40 minutes from home. The weather was once again very nice. The sun was very bright and hot when it was out. Occasionally a cloud would obscure the sun and we would get a brief rest from the intensity.

I was very surprised that Vern had more playing time. It made for a fun fun game to watch.

                                    

In addition to his corner position Vern played on the offensive line. He seemed much more confident this week. He made some good tackles and blocked well.

Vern also was on the kickoff squad. I had never seen Vern do this before but he stepped up and did well.

I have to say, I was one proud mama.

Here are some photos. This first one is Vern on the kickoff team. Notice some things never change as his shirt is untucked...

It is hard to see #27 but he is to the right of the kid tossing the ball in photo below. He is blocking.

 

Here is Vern on the kickoff team again. He loves to play and it is the only time in his life he is on time and ready for the next play!!! 

 

 

Vern did a great job. Here he is after the post team meeting. He didn't want his picture taken but you can see how "stinky and sweaty" he gets. Amazing how young boys can get so ripe...

 

This final shot, we see the game board with  a win 19-0.  Season the team moved to 2 wins 0 losses.

 

 We have no games during Labor Day so next game is scheduled for September 9.


***Post note*** Vern's increased playing time was because one of his teammates had a concussion according to Vern.

Football Registration

I can't believe it is time to register for football all ready!  Vern wanted to play for the other town where he goes to school this year. I let him make the final decision and that is what he chose to do.

I am kind of sad he won't be in orange this year. It will be either purple, white or gold.  I doubt he will get his same number either so it will be a big change playing for this new town. It is a lot bigger and I am sure he won't get as much playing time.

His old team is going to miss him. I have had two adults inquire if Vern was signing up this year.  It was hard to tell them no. They are great guys and do SO much work with the kids. You can tell they are great dads and really want what is best for the boys to give so much time to them.  I am sure the dads in the new town will be just as caring.

Vern is all registered and the fees are paid. Now we just have to wait to see which team he gets assigned to and when practices begin. 

I must be a crazy football mom..OK I know I am because I get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it starting!  I think I love it just as much as Vern does.

Game 3

Dearest Football Fans,

Vern's team is not starting out to well. After game 3 they are now 0-3. This is in no way an indication that they are playing poorly. They just have a couple big thing going on that prevent them from scoring. The biggest is speed or more appropriately I should say lack of speed. Every time the opposing team runs outside our boys just can't keep up. The other teams running back just zooms away from our team.  The opposite is true when our team is on offense.  The opposing team catches whomever happens to have the ball. If we try to run outside, the poor kid is swamped with about 6 kids from the other team. 

Even Vern needs to work on his running. Being a lineman, he doesn't need to be as fast as the wirey kids but he does need to be able to move. I hate to say this but it looks like I am out there running! I told the hubby we need to start a running program with Vern and get us all into shape. Unfortunately I don't know any form tricks to tell him as my body is about as adept at running as oh.... a sloth. My entire body groans and rebels anytime I have attempted to run. My bones clatter together and those around me think a nearby building is collapsing. My knock knees and pigeon toed feet do not help matters. I am able to trip and fall down simply w-a-l-k-i-n-g across a parking lot. (Yes, that happened a month ago.) I am digressing but trying to stress the point of my non-running abilities. How will Vern excel at football if he has my running ability. (big sad tears)  Is there anyone out there that has tips for helping a child learn to run? How would I even find such information?

I was pleased with how the game went, except for the winning part. I can see the kids getting discouraged and that is sad to watch. Hubby did get some great shots this week with his new camera. It has a "ginormous" lens. Ok, it's not THAT big but when men talk it is all about the size. Here are some of my favorite shots of the week. I love the contrasting colors.

I was hoping this next shot was a show of sportsman like conduct. Vern tells me, No mom I was mad at that dude. Sigh.... I like my thoughts better.

Next we have another line shot. I like #4 getting double teamed in this shot and trying to bust through.

East is 2-0!

Vern has his second football game and they WON! WOOT WOOT goes the mom again.

It was a really close and good game. The kids are still really into learning the game and listening. I NEVER have seen Vern listen so closely and try so hard. I knew he had it in him.

Ok there is one in the picture that doesn't seem enthralled with what coach is saying...

The opposing team had super fast girl on their team. She was the star player as she knew how to run, knew a lot about the game and was not afraid of those boys!  Coach ran our players the other way when she was on the field. :-)

The boys got to play some different positions. Vern really does need to be in tackle football as when he was running back and got the ball he charged up the middle pushing kids out of the way but forgetting that they could pull the flag off him easy that way.  Maybe soon I'll have to look for a tackle football league although that scares the mom.

Vern also got to play wide receiver. The only time he got the ball thrown to him he dropped it... Here is a shot where he was a decoy.

Vern's team scored on the last play of the game and team East won 14-7.

A couple of side notes, his sisters team had yet ANOTHER coach and they of course lost all games. Their team has even forgotten how to serve. Poor thing.  My college and pro football teams both won so fabulous football weekend!
